One of the most common questions I receive from expectant parents is:

"When should we book our newborn photos?"

The short answer?

As early as possible.

The best time to secure your newborn photographer is usually during your second trimester, or early in your third trimester.

While your baby's arrival may still feel a long way off, newborn photographers typically only take a limited number of bookings each month to allow flexibility around due dates. Waiting until your baby arrives can sometimes mean missing out on your preferred photographer altogether.

Why Do Newborn Sessions Need To Be Booked Before Baby Arrives?

Unlike family or maternity sessions, newborn photography is tied to a very small window of time. Those tiny curled-up poses, sleepy expressions, delicate features and brand-new details change incredibly quickly during the first few weeks.

Most newborn sessions take place within the first 5–14 days after birth, while babies are still naturally sleepy and comfortable being gently posed.

Booking before your baby arrives allows your photographer to reserve space around your due date and ensure availability once your little one makes their appearance.

What If My Baby Arrives Early Or Late?

This is one of the biggest concerns parents have when booking newborn photography. The good news is that newborn photographers understand that babies rarely arrive exactly when expected.

When you book your session, your due date is used as a guide rather than a fixed session date. Once your baby arrives, you'll simply get in touch and we'll schedule your session within the ideal timeframe.

Whether your baby decides to arrive two weeks early or ten days late, space is already reserved around your due date.

What Is The Best Age For Newborn Photos?

The ideal time for newborn photography is generally within the first two weeks after birth.

During this stage babies tend to:

  • Sleep more deeply
  • Curl naturally into womb-like positions
  • Settle more easily
  • Change less frequently between feeds

That said, beautiful newborn photographs can be created at any age. If your baby is already a few weeks old, don't panic.

Many parents discover newborn photography after their baby has arrived and we can still create timeless portraits that celebrate this special season.

Should I Wait Until My Baby Is Born To Book?

In most cases, no.

Many photographers only accept a limited number of newborn bookings each month.

Because newborn sessions are scheduled around due dates rather than fixed dates, availability can fill months in advance.

Booking during pregnancy gives you peace of mind knowing everything is already organised before those sleep-deprived newborn days begin.

What Happens After I Book?

Once you've secured your due date, I'll guide you through everything you need to know before your session.

You'll receive information about:

  • Preparing for your session
  • What to wear
  • Styling assistance
  • What to expect on the day
  • Artwork and image options

My goal is to make the process as simple and stress-free as possible so you can focus on enjoying those precious first days with your baby.
