Welcoming a new baby is one of the most significant seasons in family life.

It is also one of the fastest moving.

The newborn stage is brief. Tiny details change daily -the way your baby curls into your chest, the shape of their little hands, the sleepy stretches, the newborn expressions - all of it changes far sooner than most parents expect.

For many families, newborn photography is not just about having beautiful photos of a baby. It is about preserving the beginning of a new chapter before those earliest days become a blur.

If you are expecting a baby and considering newborn photography in Nelson, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know. We will cover when to book, what happens if your baby arrives early or late, the best age for newborn photos, studio versus in-home sessions, what to wear, what to expect during your session, safety, family photographs, and how the process works from beginning to end.

What Is Newborn Photography?

Newborn photography is designed to document your baby’s earliest days and the beginning of life as a newly expanded family.

While many people picture newborn photography as photographs of a sleeping baby wrapped beautifully in soft fabrics, a complete newborn session is usually much more than that.

A newborn gallery can include portraits of your baby on their own, images with parents, sibling photographs, full family portraits, and small details like hands, feet, eyelashes and expressions.

The goal is not simply to record what your baby looked like. It is to preserve what this season felt like.

Newborn photography is about your baby, but it is also about the relationships surrounding them.

Why Families Choose Newborn Photography

The newborn stage often feels all-consuming while you are living it.

There are feeds, nappies, recovery, visitors, appointments, broken sleep and the enormous emotional adjustment of welcoming a new baby.

At the time, it can feel impossible that you could ever forget the details. But as the months and years pass, it is often the small things that fade first.

Photographs cannot stop time, but they can preserve a small piece of it.

For many families, newborn photographs become more valuable with time because they hold details that memory alone often cannot.

When Should You Book A Newborn Photographer?

The best time to book your newborn photographer is during pregnancy.

Most newborn photographers only accept a limited number of due dates each month. This is because babies rarely arrive exactly when expected, and flexibility needs to be built into the calendar.

Ideally, I recommend booking during your second or third trimester.

Booking before your baby arrives means your due date is reserved and you are not trying to organise a newborn session during those early, sleep-deprived days after birth.

It also means you have time to ask questions, receive preparation information and feel confident about what to expect before baby arrives.

What Happens If My Baby Arrives Early Or Late?

This is one of the most common concerns parents have before booking newborn photography.

The good news is that newborn photographers expect it.

Very few babies arrive exactly on their due date. Some arrive early, some arrive late, and some arrive much earlier or later than anyone anticipated.

For this reason, newborn photography is booked differently from most other portrait sessions.

Rather than locking in a fixed session date months in advance, space is reserved around your estimated due date. Once your baby arrives, we finalise the actual session date based on their arrival and your family’s needs.

If your baby arrives early, simply get in touch once you are able. If your baby arrives late, the session is adjusted accordingly.

This flexibility is part of the process.

What Is The Best Age For Newborn Photos?

Newborn photographs are most commonly taken within the first two weeks after birth.

During this stage, babies are usually sleepier, curl naturally and often settle more easily. This can be a lovely time for those classic newborn portraits many families imagine.

However, this does not mean beautiful newborn photographs cannot be created later.

A two week old baby photographs differently from a six week old baby, but different does not mean less meaningful.

Older newborns are often more alert, more expressive and more interested in the world around them. Those photographs can be just as beautiful and often capture a different part of your baby's early personality.

For this reason, I welcome newborns up to around 6 weeks of age.

If your baby is already a few weeks old, please don't assume you have missed your opportunity. The most important thing is preserving this chapter while it is still fresh.

If your baby is older than 6 weeks, a family session is often the perfect alternative. Rather than focusing on the traditional newborn stage, these sessions celebrate your growing family and capture all the little details that make this season so special.

Many families discover me after the traditional newborn window has passed, and a family session can be a beautiful way to preserve those precious early months before they change again.

Studio Newborn Photography?

Studio newborn photography offers a carefully prepared environment designed specifically for newborn sessions.

Everything is ready before you arrive.

The space is prepared, the lighting is consistent, the styling is organised, and all newborn outfits, wraps, bonnets, blankets and textures are available.

For many parents, this is one of the biggest benefits of a studio session. You do not need to tidy the house, prepare a nursery, find suitable light or worry about whether your home is photo-ready.

You simply arrive, settle in and let the session unfold.

Studio newborn photography often creates a timeless, refined look. The focus remains entirely on your baby and your family connection, without the distractions of everyday life in the background.

For families who love clean, classic and heirloom-style portraits, a studio newborn session is often the best fit.

In-Home Newborn Photography

In-home newborn photography tells a slightly different story.

Rather than photographing your baby in a dedicated studio space, the session takes place in the environment where your baby’s earliest days are unfolding.

Your bedroom.

Your living room.

The nursery you prepared.

The chair where you have spent hours feeding your baby.

These ordinary spaces can become deeply meaningful over time because they form part of your family’s story.

In-home sessions often feel more personal and documentary in nature. They can still be beautiful and carefully photographed, but the emphasis is also on your environment and the memories attached to it.

This option can be especially meaningful for families who want their home included in the photographs, or for those who feel most comfortable staying in their own space after birth.

Studio Or In-Home: Which Is Better?

Neither option is better.

They simply create different kinds of photographs.

A studio newborn session usually feels more polished, styled and timeless. Everything is prepared for you and the focus remains on your baby and family.

An in-home newborn session usually feels more personal and story-driven. Your home becomes part of the imagery and the photographs preserve not just your baby, but the place where this chapter began.

The right choice depends on what feels most meaningful to your family.

My Approach To Newborn Photography

My newborn sessions are calm, gentle and baby-led.

That means the session is guided by your baby’s needs rather than a strict schedule or rigid shot list.

If your baby needs feeding, we pause.

If your baby needs cuddles, we pause.

If your baby needs more time to settle, we take that time.

The aim is to create a relaxed experience for the whole family while preserving beautiful, timeless images of your baby’s earliest days.

My sessions allow up to four hours, not because we spend four hours constantly taking photographs, but because newborns need time. Feeding, settling, changing, comforting and simply being a baby are all part of the session.

There is no pressure for your baby to perform, sleep perfectly or fit into a set plan.

What Happens Before Your Session?

Once your newborn session is booked, you will receive guidance to help you prepare. This includes information about what to expect, what to bring and what to wear.

One of the most important parts of preparation is removing unnecessary stress. You do not need to buy special newborn outfits, know how to pose, have a perfectly settled baby, or have all the answers before you arrive.

The process is designed to feel simple and supportive, especially during a season when parents already have enough to think about.

What Should My Baby Wear?

One of the most common questions parents ask is what their baby should wear for newborn photos.

For my newborn sessions, the answer is simple: everything for baby is provided.

Over the years, I have carefully curated a collection of newborn wraps, knits, bonnets, blankets and handmade outfits sourced from talented makers around the world.

Each piece has been chosen specifically for newborn photography, with a focus on soft textures, timeless colours and beautiful craftsmanship.

This means you do not need to shop for newborn outfits before your session.

It also helps create a cohesive gallery, where the styling works beautifully from image to image and your baby remains the focus.

Why Simple Styling Works Best

Newborns do not need elaborate outfits to be beautiful. In fact, the simplest styling is often the most timeless.

Soft wraps, delicate knits, natural textures and neutral colours allow your baby’s features to remain the centre of the image.

Trendy outfits can date quickly. Timeless styling allows the photographs to age beautifully.

The aim is not to create images that feel fashionable for a moment. The aim is to create photographs you will still love decades from now.

What Should Parents Wear?

While all baby clothing and styling pieces are provided, parents and siblings wear their own clothing.

Simple, neutral tones photograph beautifully.

Cream, white, beige, soft browns, muted earthy tones and natural fabrics all work well.

Large logos, busy patterns and bright colours can draw attention away from the connection in the photograph.

The goal is not for everyone to match perfectly. The goal is for the colours and textures to work together naturally.

Mothers also have access to my small client wardrobe, and I provide styling guidance to help coordinate the rest of the family.

Can Parents Be Included In Newborn Photos?

Yes, and I strongly encourage it.

Newborn photography is not only about documenting your baby. It is also about documenting the people who loved them from the very beginning.

Many parents feel hesitant about being photographed so soon after birth. That is completely understandable.

You may feel tired, sore, emotional or not quite like yourself yet.

But years from now, your child will not look at these photographs and notice whether you looked tired.

They will see that you were there.

They will see how loved they were.

They will see the beginning of their story.

Can Siblings Be Included?

Absolutely.

Welcoming a new baby is a major milestone for older siblings too.

Some children are immediately affectionate and curious. Others need more time. Some are excited, some are unsure, and some are far more interested in exploring the studio than sitting still for a photograph.

All of this is normal.

Sibling photographs are approached with patience and flexibility. I do not expect young children to behave perfectly or pose like adults.

Often, the most meaningful sibling photographs come from simple, natural interactions.

A small hand on baby’s blanket.

A quick cuddle.

A curious look.

A moment that could not have been forced.

What If My Toddler Does Not Cooperate?

This is one of the biggest worries parents have.

The truth is that toddlers are not supposed to cooperate like adults. They are little people adjusting to a very big change, often while navigating big feelings about becoming an older sibling.

A successful newborn session does not depend on a toddler sitting perfectly still and smiling on command.

It depends on patience, flexibility and working with children rather than against them.

Over the years, I have photographed many toddlers who were shy, energetic, cautious, emotional, determined not to participate or simply having an off day. It is all completely normal.

Rather than expecting perfection, I adapt the session to suit your child.

Sometimes we photograph sibling images at the very beginning while their attention is fresh. Sometimes I turn parts of the session into a game. Sometimes I ask toddlers to help me with little jobs so they feel involved and important. Sometimes we take a break, have a snack, read a book or simply allow them some space before trying again.

If a toddler doesn't want to sit beside the baby, we might do cuddling with mum and dad instead. Often the most meaningful photographs come from these natural interactions rather than perfectly posed moments.

As both a photographer and a mother myself, I understand that children have good days and difficult days. There is no judgement and no expectation that your child needs to perform for the camera.

My job is to create a calm environment, follow your child's lead where needed and find genuine moments of connection, regardless of whether your toddler is full of energy, feeling shy or somewhere in between.

There is no need to apologise for normal child behaviour. I promise I have seen it all before.

How Long Does A Newborn Session Take?

My newborn sessions allow up to four hours.

This does not mean we spend four hours taking photographs. Much of that time may be spent feeding, settling, changing, cuddling and allowing your baby to move through the session at their own pace.

Newborn photography is different from other types of portrait sessions because babies cannot be rushed.

A generous timeframe removes pressure from everyone.

Parents do not need to worry if baby needs another feed.

Siblings do not need to be rushed through family photographs.

Baby does not need to settle instantly.

There is space for the session to unfold naturally.

What Happens During The Session?

Every newborn session is slightly different because every baby is different.

Generally, the session may include a combination of family photographs, parent and baby portraits, sibling images, baby-only portraits and detail photographs.

We move gently and slowly, following your baby’s needs.

If baby is settled, we may begin with baby portraits. If family photographs feel like the best place to start, we may begin there instead.

The session is guided by what works best for your baby and your family on the day.

What If My Baby Will Not Sleep?

Your baby does not need to sleep perfectly for us to create beautiful photographs.

Some babies sleep through most of their session. Others remain awake and alert for much of it. Both are completely normal.

Awake newborn photographs can be beautiful. They often capture eye contact, early expressions and a sense of curiosity that sleeping portraits cannot.

The aim is not to force your baby into a specific version of newborn photography. The aim is to document who they are during this brief stage of life.

Newborn Photography Safety

Your baby's comfort and safety should always come first.

Newborn babies are delicate, and every part of the session should reflect that.

A safe newborn session is slow, gentle and responsive. There should never be any pressure to force a baby into a pose, keep them asleep or continue if they are uncomfortable.

Throughout the session, I closely follow your baby's cues. If they need to be fed, cuddled, settled or simply held by mum or dad for a while, we stop and give them the time they need.

This is one of the reasons experience matters. Newborn photography requires patience, awareness and an understanding of normal newborn behaviour. Knowing when to pause, when to adapt and when to abandon a particular idea altogether is just as important as knowing how to use a camera.

For many parents, one of the biggest concerns is whether their baby will sleep, settle or cooperate during the session. The good news is that a successful newborn session does not depend on any of those things. The session is built around your baby, not the other way around.

No photograph is ever more important than your baby's wellbeing.

What Should I Bring?

Most families are surprised by how little they need to bring.

Because all newborn outfits, wraps and styling pieces are provided, you do not need to pack a bag full of clothing options for your baby.

Usually, it is helpful to bring nappies, feeding supplies, a dummy if your baby uses one, and a spare change of clothing for yourself.

If there is something sentimental you would like included, such as a special blanket or family heirloom, you are welcome to mention this before the session so we can decide whether it will work with the overall styling.

What Happens After The Session?

After your session, I carefully review your photographs and prepare a proofing gallery for you to view.

Once your proofing gallery is ready, you'll be invited to browse through your images and select your favourites.

After your selections have been made, I individually hand-edit each chosen image. This is where the final gallery truly comes to life.

My editing style is soft, timeless and natural. I want your photographs to feel polished and beautiful while still looking like you. My goal is never to follow editing trends that will feel dated in a few years, but to create images that will still feel just as meaningful decades from now.

Your final edited gallery will be delivered within 4–6 weeks of making your selections, although it is often ready much sooner depending on the season.

From there, your photographs can be enjoyed as digital files, displayed as beautiful artwork throughout your home, or preserved in albums that can be passed down for generations.

Why Professional Newborn Photography Is Worth The Investment

Professional newborn photography is about much more than simply taking photographs.

It combines experience, safety, preparation, styling, technical skill and an understanding of how to work with newborns and young families during an often overwhelming season of life.

A professional photographer knows how to create beautiful images while keeping your baby comfortable and safe, guide you through the process, and take the pressure off so you can simply enjoy the experience.

It is also about preserving your memories in a way that is designed to last.

While phone photographs certainly have their place, professional photography provides carefully crafted images, high-quality products and heirloom artwork that can be enjoyed for generations.

Many purchases lose importance as the years pass. Newborn photographs often do the opposite.

As your baby grows, these images become a tangible record of a season that can never be repeated. They become part of your family's history, preserving not only what your baby looked like, but who they were loved by, how small they were, and what the beginning of your story together felt like.
