Bringing a new baby into the world comes with a lot of unknowns.
Between feeding schedules, sleepless nights and adjusting to life as a family, it's completely normal to wonder how you're supposed to prepare for a newborn photography session too.
The good news?
You don't need to stress.
My newborn sessions are designed to be relaxed, baby-led and enjoyable for the whole family. You don't need a perfectly sleeping baby, a perfectly tidy home or perfectly behaved siblings. You simply need to show up and let me take care of the rest.
Book During Pregnancy
The best time to prepare for your newborn session actually starts before your baby arrives.
Most families book during pregnancy, allowing me to reserve space around their due date and ensure availability once baby is here.
After your baby is born, simply let me know and we'll arrange a session date that works best for your family.
Feed Baby Before The Session
A full baby is usually a happy baby.
If possible, I recommend feeding your baby shortly before the session begins or as soon as you arrive.
This helps your little one feel settled and comfortable as we ease into the session.
That said, newborns don't always stick to a schedule, and that's completely okay. We allow plenty of time for feeding breaks whenever they're needed.
Dress Baby In Something Easy To Remove
One of the simplest ways to make the session run smoothly is dressing baby in clothing that can be removed without disturbing them too much.
A simple zip-up sleepsuit works perfectly.
Avoid outfits that need to be pulled over baby's head if possible, as this can sometimes wake a sleepy little one just as we're getting started.
Keep Clothing Simple For The Family
When it comes to family photographs, simple is always best.
Soft neutral colours photograph beautifully and help keep the focus exactly where it belongs — on your connection and your new baby. Think:
- Cream
- White
- Beige
- Soft earthy tones
- Muted colours
Avoid large logos, busy patterns or bright colours that can distract from the image.
If you're unsure what to wear, I'm always happy to help guide you.
Don't Worry If Baby Is Awake
Many parents arrive apologising because their baby has been awake all morning.
Please don't.
Newborn sessions are never dependent on a baby sleeping perfectly.
Some babies sleep for most of their session.
Some babies spend much of the session awake and curious.
Both create beautiful photographs.
Allow Plenty Of Time
One of the biggest differences between newborn photography and other types of sessions is that newborn sessions are intentionally unhurried. I allow up to 4 hours per session to make sure:
There is no rush.
We pause for feeds.
We stop for cuddles.
We change nappies.
We settle baby when needed.
The session moves at your baby's pace.
Relax And Enjoy The Experience
This might sound surprising, but the most important thing you can do is relax.
These early days pass incredibly quickly. Your newborn session is an opportunity to slow down for a moment and simply enjoy being together.
The tiny fingers.
The sleepy cuddles.
The way your baby fits perfectly in your arms.
These are the moments you'll want to remember years from now.
There Is No Such Thing As The Perfect Session
Your baby doesn't need to sleep perfectly.
Your toddler doesn't need to behave perfectly.
You don't need to feel perfectly rested.
The goal isn't perfection.
The goal is preserving this fleeting chapter exactly as it is.
Because one day, these moments will feel impossibly far away.
And you'll be so grateful you took the time to remember them.
