One of the most common concerns I hear from parents before their newborn session is:
"What if my baby won't sleep?"
It's completely understandable.
You've probably seen lots of dreamy newborn photos featuring sleepy babies curled up in perfect little poses, and now you're wondering if your baby will cooperate long enough for us to create anything similar.
The good news?
Your baby does not need to sleep the entire session for us to create beautiful photographs.
In fact, some of my favourite images have come from babies who spent much of their session wide awake.
Every Baby Is Different
Just like adults, newborns have their own personalities, preferences and temperaments.
Some babies arrive, have a feed, drift off to sleep and stay settled for most of the session. Others would much rather spend their time observing the world around them.
Neither is right or wrong.
My sessions are designed to follow your baby's lead rather than force them into a particular schedule or expectation.
Awake Babies Create Beautiful Images Too
Many parents are surprised to learn that awake newborn photographs can be just as special as sleepy ones.
Wide eyes. Curious expressions. The way they look up at mum and dad. These are moments that disappear just as quickly as those sleepy newborn stretches.
While the photographs may look a little different from traditional posed newborn images, they often tell an equally meaningful story.
What If My Baby Is Fussy?
Babies cry.
Babies cluster feed.
Babies have unsettled moments.
That's completely normal.
As both a mother and a newborn photographer, I understand that these early days can feel unpredictable. If your baby needs extra cuddles, extra feeding or simply a little more time to settle, that's absolutely okay. Sometimes the cuddles between feeds become some of the most treasured images from the entire session.
The Goal Isn't Perfection
When parents look back at their newborn photographs years from now, they aren't usually focused on whether their baby slept for two hours straight.
What matters most is remembering:
The tiny features.
The way your baby fit in your arms.
The overwhelming love.
The feeling of those first weeks together.
That's what newborn photography is really about.
One of the things parents often tell me after their session is how relaxed they felt once they realised there was no pressure.
No perfect baby required.
No perfect behaviour required.
Just space to slow down, soak in this fleeting season and create beautiful memories together. Whether your baby sleeps the entire session or spends the whole time keeping a close eye on me, we'll create photographs you'll treasure for years to come.
